George Potter's fascination with wax figures began during a childhood trip to London's famous Madame Tussauds. That early experience planted a dream that would eventually bring wax museum artistry to America for the first time. After making his fortune in real estate and rentals, Potter studied the St. Augustine market carefully before opening his museum in what was then the corner of King Street and San Marco Avenue. His vision was to create figures so lifelike that visitors would feel transported into the presence of history's greatest personalities, and the craftspeople he employed succeeded magnificently. The attention to detail in Potter's wax figures is extraordinary. Each sculpture begins with meticulous research into every aspect of the person being depicted, from facial features down to individual freckles and hair placement.
