Driving to St. Augustine from Jacksonville
45 minutes. Close enough for a day trip, interesting enough to stay the weekend.

The Fast Route
I-95 South from Jacksonville to Exit 318 (SR-16). Follow SR-16 east into St. Augustine. The whole thing takes about 45 minutes without traffic. Simple, direct, and the right call if you’re doing a day trip and want to maximize time in the city.
The Scenic Route
From Jacksonville Beach or Atlantic Beach, take A1A South. You’ll drive through Neptune Beach, Ponte Vedra Beach, and the GTM Research Reserve – a stretch of protected coastal land with estuary views, wildlife, and almost no development. This is the Florida that existed before the condos. You cross the Vilano Bridge into St. Augustine from the north, which puts you in Vilano Beach first – a quieter, more local-feeling arrival than coming from I-95.
Add about 30 minutes over the I-95 route. Worth it on a clear morning.
Stops Worth Making
Amelia Island / Fernandina Beach (30 min north detour)
If you’re not in a hurry, go north first. Fernandina Beach on Amelia Island is one of the most underrated small towns in Florida – a genuine Victorian-era downtown, Fort Clinch State Park, and beaches that rival anything further south. Spend a morning there, then drive down to St. Augustine. It’s a backwards route from Jacksonville but it makes for a genuinely great day.
GTM Research Reserve
On the A1A scenic route, the Guana Tolomato Matanzas National Estuarine Research Reserve has a beach access and trail system that most people drive right past. If you want a quiet, uncrowded beach walk before arriving in the city, pull off here. No crowds, no fees, just coastal Florida at its best.
Vilano Beach
If you arrive via A1A, you’ll come through Vilano Beach before crossing into the historic district. Stop at the Vilano Beach area for a coffee and a look at the water before continuing. The view back toward St. Augustine across the Matanzas River from Vilano is one of the better views in the area.
Day Trip vs. Overnight
St. Augustine is close enough to Jacksonville for a legitimate day trip, but one day is never quite enough. The historic district alone takes a half-day to walk properly, and that doesn’t include the lighthouse, the Alligator Farm, or a boat tour. If you’ve never been before, seriously consider staying overnight – the city is completely different after the day-trippers leave, and the evening ghost tour scene is one of the better things to do in Florida.
