The Direct Route

I-75 North from Tampa to I-10 East, then I-95 South to Exit 318 (SR-16) into St. Augustine. About 175 miles and 2 to 2.5 hours depending on traffic through the Jacksonville area. This is the most direct route and the one to take if you just want to get there efficiently.

Local Tip: The I-10 stretch between I-75 and I-95 in Florida is long, straight, and not particularly interesting. Fill the gas tank before you get on it and download a good podcast. The scenery picks up once you cross I-95 and head south toward St. Augustine.

The Orlando Route (adds 30 min, more options)

Take I-4 East from Tampa through Orlando, then I-95 North to St. Augustine. This route is about 30-45 minutes longer but gives you the option to stop in the Orlando area, and the I-4 through Orlando is more visually interesting than I-10. If you have kids who want to stop at Disney or Universal, this is obviously your route.

Stops Worth Making

Gainesville (slight detour off I-75)

If you want to break up the drive and stretch your legs somewhere interesting, Gainesville is about an hour from Tampa off I-75. University of Florida town, genuinely good food scene, and the Florida Museum of Natural History is free and better than you’d expect. Get back on I-75 North and continue to I-10 East. The detour adds maybe 30 minutes total.

Lake City (fuel on I-10)

The natural fuel stop on the I-10 route. Not a destination, but a good place to fill the tank and grab food before the final push to St. Augustine. Everything you need is right off the interstate.

Ocala National Forest Springs (summer only)

If you’re driving in summer and want to cool off, the Ocala National Forest springs are some of the best swimming holes in Florida – crystal clear 68-degree water year-round. Silver Glen Springs and Juniper Springs are the best. Getting there requires a small detour off I-75 toward I-4, but on a hot summer day it’s an outstanding stop. About 90 minutes from Tampa.

Coming Back: Consider A1A

On the return trip from St. Augustine to Tampa, consider going south on A1A instead of jumping straight to I-95. Drive through Flagler Beach, Ormond Beach, and Daytona – you can pick up I-4 West at Daytona and head straight back to Tampa. It adds maybe 30-45 minutes but the coastal drive through Flagler Beach is genuinely beautiful and breaks up the return trip significantly.
