Free Things to Do in St. Augustine
America’s Oldest City without the tourist price tag.
St. Augustine is one of those rare destinations where the best experiences genuinely cost nothing. The history is outside on the streets, the beaches are free, and the architecture rewards people who simply walk around with their eyes open. Here is how to do St. Augustine well on a tight budget.
Completely Free
St. George Street, The pedestrian historic district costs nothing to walk. Street performers, historic architecture, the Old City Gates, and the general atmosphere of one of America’s most interesting streets are all free. You can spend two hours here without opening your wallet.
The Castillo de San Marcos exterior grounds, The grounds surrounding the Spanish fort are free and open to the public. You can walk the perimeter, see the moat, photograph the fort against the Matanzas Bay waterfront, and soak up the history without paying admission. Interior admission is $15 for adults and free for children under 15, and free for everyone with a National Park Access Pass.
Flagler College exterior, One of the most beautiful buildings in Florida and you can photograph it freely from the street. The Ponce de Leon Hotel turned college campus is genuinely stunning, particularly the main entrance and tower. Paid tours of the interior are available and worth it, but the exterior alone is remarkable.
The Waterfront, Avenida Menendez along the bay is free to walk and consistently beautiful. The view of the Castillo from the waterfront seating area, the boats on the Matanzas River, and the Bridge of Lions in the background is one of the best views in Florida. Free.
St. Augustine Beach, The beach is free. Parking is the only cost, and arriving early on weekdays often means finding a free street spot. The beach itself, miles of Atlantic coastline, costs nothing.
Anastasia State Park beach access, Free with a Florida State Park annual pass ($120/year for unlimited access to all Florida state parks, worth it if you visit more than three parks annually). Otherwise $8 per vehicle.
The Lightner Museum hosts free admission on the first Friday of each month. The museum is housed in the former Alcazar Hotel, one of Henry Flagler’s grand resort hotels, and the building alone is worth seeing. The collections are genuinely interesting, not just tourist filler.
Budget-Friendly (Under $20)
St. Augustine Lighthouse, $15 adults, free for kids under 7. Climbing the 165-foot lighthouse delivers the best views in the city. The maritime museum below is included in admission and better than you would expect.
Ripley’s Believe It or Not, Around $24 for adults, but discount tickets are frequently available online. Climate-controlled and entertaining for an hour or two, particularly for families.
Self-guided audio tours, Several apps offer self-guided walking tours of the historic district for under $15. You get the history and the route without paying for a guided group tour.
