Civil Rights History

Andrew Young Crossing

Set into the pavement along King Street at the Plaza de la Constitución, the Andrew Young Crossing marks the spot where Andrew Young — then a top aide to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and later a U.S. congressman, United Nations ambassador, and mayor of Atlanta — was beaten by a white mob during a peaceful night march on June 9, 1964.

Bronze footprints trace his path across the street, paired with his own words remembering that night. It is an easy stop to walk past without noticing, and a powerful one when you know what happened here: the violence in St. Augustine that summer, broadcast nationally, became part of the case for the Civil Rights Act.

Free and open any time, in the center of downtown.
