Butler Beach
A quiet, uncrowded stretch of Anastasia Island between St. Augustine Beach and Crescent Beach , family-friendly sand, vacation rentals, and a slower pace.
Butler Beach sits on the middle stretch of Anastasia Island’s Atlantic coast, south of St. Augustine Beach and north of Crescent Beach. It’s one of those places that locals know about and most visitors drive right past on their way to the more advertised spots. That’s the point. Wide sand, lighter foot traffic, no amusement parks, no strip of resort hotels , just a good beach that happens to be twenty minutes from one of the most historically significant cities in the country.
The community is almost entirely residential and vacation rental-based. There are no boardwalks, no arcades, and no beach-town souvenir shops on every corner. What you do get: direct beach access at multiple public ramps along A1A South, quiet morning walks where you’re sharing the shore with a handful of other people and a lot of shorebirds, and the kind of evening where you watch the sun go down from a rental porch with a drink in your hand and nothing pressing on the schedule.
Butler Beach works best for families who want beach space without crowds, couples looking for a quiet mid-week getaway, and travelers who prefer a vacation rental to a hotel room. It’s also a practical base for exploring the whole southern Anastasia Island corridor , Crescent Beach and Matanzas Inlet are minutes away, and St. Augustine’s Historic Downtown is a 20-minute drive north.
The Beach
Butler Beach is the stretch of Atlantic coastline that runs between Ocean Hammock Park to the north and continues south toward Crescent Beach. The sand is wide and flat, the waves are consistent but not aggressive, and the parking situation is significantly better than at St. Augustine Beach proper.
Local tip
Look for the public beach access points along A1A South between Ocean Hammock Park and the Matanzas Inlet. Most are marked and have limited free parking. Arrive before 9am on weekends and you’ll almost always find a spot.
Vacation Rentals at Butler Beach
Butler Beach is primarily a vacation rental community. Beach houses, canal-front cottages, and oceanfront properties make up most of the lodging here. There are no large resort hotels. If you want a kitchen, a porch, and direct beach access without checking in at a front desk, this is one of the better areas in St. Augustine to find it.
Booking tip
Butler Beach rentals book out 3, 4 months ahead for summer weekends and holiday weeks. Spring and fall shoulder seasons offer the best combination of availability, lower rates, and good beach weather.
Nearby Dining & Essentials
Butler Beach itself is mostly residential , the nearest concentration of restaurants and shops is in St. Augustine Beach, about 10 minutes north on A1A. A few local options are scattered along the corridor.
