Waterfront Dining in St. Augustine
Restaurants where the view is part of the meal, from sunset decks on the Matanzas to dockside seafood on the Intracoastal.
St. Augustine sits on the water in every direction. The Atlantic to the east, the Matanzas River cutting through the heart of downtown, the Tolomato to the north, and the Intracoastal Waterway running the entire length of the county. That geography has shaped the restaurant scene for centuries, and today the city has more genuinely waterfront dining options than almost any small city in Florida. Sunset over the bay, dolphins surfacing during dinner, sailboats cutting past the deck , the view is genuinely part of why these places work.
The waterfront scene splits into a few categories. Bayfront downtown spots like the Ice Plant and Harry’s give you the historic skyline with the Bridge of Lions in view. North-end favorites like Cap’s on the Water and Aunt Kate’s sit on the Tolomato River with sunset deck access. Beach-side spots like Crabby’s Beachside and Sunset Grille face the Atlantic. Vilano-area places like Pesca Vilano Rooftop and the Beaches at Vilano give you elevated views over the inlet. And small dockside spots scattered across the area offer everything from fish camps to upscale seafood with boats tied up out front.
For sunset dinners, time matters. Most waterfront restaurants take reservations specifically for “sunset window” tables, and they fill up fast in spring and fall. If you can’t get a reservation, aim for an early dinner (5 PM is usually fine) or a late one (after 8 PM) and grab the deck for drinks at sunset on either side. Below are the picks worth planning around, plus the full directory of waterfront restaurants across the area.

What to Know About Waterfront Dining
Sunset Reservations
Sunset tables are the most-requested seating at every waterfront restaurant. Reserve 1 to 2 weeks ahead in spring/fall, longer for special occasions. Specify “sunset window” if the system allows.
Best Direction
For ocean sunrises, face east (Atlantic-facing decks at St. Augustine Beach and Crescent). For sunsets, face west (Tolomato/Matanzas). The pier at Vilano is one of the best public sunset spots if you don’t get a deck table.
Boat Docking
Several waterfront restaurants offer guest dock space for arriving by boat: Cap’s, Aunt Kate’s, and a few others. Check ahead and arrive early on weekends , slips fill up.
Wind & Weather
Outdoor decks can be windy or chilly even in Florida. Bring a light layer for evening dinners October through April. In summer, sunset deck dining means sunset bug spray.
Dolphin Spotting
Dolphins regularly cruise past the bayfront, especially around dawn and dusk. Tables on the Matanzas often get a show during dinner. Tolomato River patios frequently see them too.
Dress Code
Most waterfront spots are casual. A few of the upscale options ask for dressy casual at dinner. Check ahead if you’re doing a special occasion.
