St. Augustine is genuinely welcoming to well-behaved dogs. Here’s where to eat with yours.
The outdoor-heavy culture of St. Augustine works in dog owners’ favor. A city built for walking, with a waterfront, pedestrian streets, and a beach nearby, naturally accommodates leashed dogs better than most Florida destinations. Several restaurants have explicitly dog-friendly patios – always confirm with the host before sitting down with your dog, as policies can vary by season and management.
Salt Life Food Shack
Salt Life Food Shack on A1A Beach Boulevard near the beach is one of the more explicitly dog-friendly dining options in the area – outdoor patio seating and a relaxed beach-town vibe that makes the whole thing feel natural. Good fish tacos, solid seafood, and a cold beer after a morning at the beach. The patio is the right call on a good weather day.
Historic District Outdoor Dining
Several restaurants in and around the historic district have outdoor courtyard or patio seating where well-behaved leashed dogs are generally tolerated. The outdoor tables along Avenida Menendez and around the plaza tend to be more dog-accommodating than indoor dining rooms. Ask the host when you arrive – most will work with you, especially on slower weekdays.
The outdoor seating at Columbia Restaurant on St. George Street is worth asking about – it can get crowded but the location and quality make it worth the effort for a special occasion with your dog.
Tips for Dining With Your Dog in St. Augustine
Always call ahead or ask when you arrive rather than assuming. Keep your dog leashed and under control – the historic district gets crowded on weekends and an anxious dog in a busy outdoor dining area is not a good situation. Bring your own water bowl. Heat is a real consideration in summer – midday outdoor dining with a dog in July requires shade and water, and some patios have neither. Early morning or evening dining is significantly more comfortable for your dog and for you.
The beach is genuinely the best dog-friendly dining adjacent experience – bring your own food, eat on Butler Beach or Crescent Beach where dogs are welcome leashed, and let the whole thing be simpler and better.
Get on the Water With Your Dog
Most organized tours don’t allow dogs, which limits the options here. The exception: kayak and paddleboard operators near Anastasia State Park, where the calm Salt Run water is ideal and several rental operations explicitly allow well-behaved dogs. Call ahead to confirm before booking, policies vary by operator and day.
Kayak and Paddleboard Rentals, Anastasia and Salt Run
The calm protected waters of the Salt Run on the back side of Anastasia Island are genuinely dog-friendly territory. Rental operators in this area have the most relaxed policy on dogs of any water activity in St. Augustine. Better than a patio in the summer heat, the water keeps everyone comfortable.
Best for: Active dog owners, anyone who prefers the water to restaurant patio sitting
Note: Confirm dog policy directly with the operator before booking
