St. Augustine Nights of Lights at the Plaza

Best Things to Do at Night in St. Augustine

Best Things to Do at Night in St. Augustine

Ghost tours, live music, waterfront bars, and the best of St. Augustine after dark.

When the sun goes down, America's oldest city gets even more interesting.

St. Augustine is not a giant nightclub town, and that is part of the appeal. The best nights here are not about velvet ropes or rooftop pools. They are about walking under old balconies, hearing live music spill out of a courtyard, catching the bayfront after sunset, ducking into a pub, taking a ghost tour you will pretend not to care about, and ending the night somewhere with brick walls, low light, and a drink in hand.

The city changes after dark. During the day, St. Augustine can feel crowded, sunny, busy, and museum-heavy. At night, the historic district becomes more atmospheric. The buildings look older. The bayfront cools off. St. George Street loses some of its daytime gift-shop energy and starts to feel more like a place to wander. If you are visiting for one night, stay downtown and keep it simple. If you are here for a long weekend, mix one organized nighttime activity with one loose, no-schedule night.

Ghosts & Gravestones – Best for First-Timers

This is the easiest recommendation for visitors who want a polished, theatrical ghost tour without having to think too hard. It is trolley-based, narrated, and includes stops such as the Old Jail and Potter's Wax Museum's Chamber of Horrors, depending on the current route. It runs about 1 hour and 20 minutes, which is a good length for families, couples, and groups who want spooky but not exhausting.

Duration: About 1 hour 20 minutes

Best for: Families, couples, and groups who want spooky but not overwhelming

A Ghostly Encounter – Best Walking Ghost Tour

A 90-minute walking tour offered seven nights a week, with stops around cemeteries and historic landmarks. This is closer to the classic St. Augustine ghost-tour experience: walk, listen, look down dark side streets, and let the city do its thing. Adults are listed at $30, children 6 to 11 at $20, and children under 6 free, which makes it a reasonable family option.

Duration: 90 minutes

Prices from: Around $30 per adult

Dark of the Moon at the Lighthouse – Best Serious Ghost Experience

The St. Augustine Lighthouse is one of the city's most famous haunted locations, and the Dark of the Moon tour is the one we would pick for people who specifically care about haunted history. It is less "jump scare" and more atmospheric, with the bonus that the lighthouse grounds at night feel completely different from a daytime visit. A factual, no-gimmicks style ghost experience with real setting and real history behind it.

Best for: Repeat visitors, serious haunted-history seekers, anyone who has done the standard ghost tours already

The Guide's Take on Ghost Tours: Do one ghost tour if you have never done one here. Do not overthink it. If you have kids or mixed ages, Ghosts & Gravestones is the safest bet. If you want to walk the old streets, do A Ghostly Encounter. If you already know St. Augustine and want something more memorable, do the Lighthouse. Book in advance during peak season (March through October) – the popular operators sell out most nights. Walking ghost tours are better than trolley ghost tours. You see more and the storytelling is more immersive on foot.

Walk the Historic District at Night

This is the free activity we recommend most often. Start near the Plaza de la Constitución, wander St. George Street, drift toward Aviles Street, then loop back toward the bayfront. At night, the old city feels more like itself. The stone, brick, balconies, courtyards, and lantern-style lighting all work better after sunset.

The best walk is not necessarily St. George Street from end to end. We like mixing it up: Charlotte Street, Hypolita Street, Aviles Street, the bayfront sidewalk, and the area around the Castillo. The Castillo itself is closed at night, but walking past it after dark is still one of the better free experiences in town. The fort, the water, the Bridge of Lions, and the lights across the bay make the whole city look staged.

Colonial Oak Music Park

One of the best downtown options. It sits just off St. George Street but feels tucked away. It hosts ticketed shows and free or casual events, with a mix of local and touring music – tribute acts, Latin fusion, country nights, and evening shows around 7 to 10 p.m. The Guide's rule for casual nights: Colonial Oak or Prohibition Kitchen.

Prohibition Kitchen

A strong choice when you want dinner, drinks, and music without leaving St. George Street. Regular music calendar, dinner daily, and a late-night menu on Friday and Saturday from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. One of the more practical late-night options in downtown.

Tradewinds Lounge

The old-school answer. Not polished in a boutique hotel way – it is a real music bar, and that is the point. Music every day, including afternoon, happy hour, and night sets, with regular local names throughout the week. The Guide's rule: if you want the local bar version, Tradewinds.

St. Augustine Amphitheatre

The big one. If there is a show at The Amp while you are in town, check it before you build your night around downtown. The 2026 calendar includes national touring acts across reggae, country, classic rock, indie, and blues – Willie Nelson, The Black Keys, Modest Mouse, Tedeschi Trucks Band, Brad Paisley, and others. The Guide's rule: if you want a real concert, The Amp.

Bars Worth Your Time

Meehan's Irish Pub

The easy waterfront recommendation. Pub feel, seafood, Irish food, and enough different spaces that it works for a lot of groups. Especially useful if you want to be near the bayfront and not get too clever.

Ice Plant Bar

The cocktail pick. Slightly away from the densest tourist strip on Riberia Street, which helps. Open until midnight Sunday through Thursday and until 2 a.m. Friday and Saturday.

The Scarlett House

A downtown pub stop with porch seating, live music, cocktails, and casual food. Formerly Scarlett O'Hara's, it still carries that familiar local-bar energy.

Barley Republic

A good beer-and-pub-food choice on Spanish Street, especially if your group wants something casual and central. Large beer selection and listed among late-night food options.

The mistake is trying to make St. Augustine into Miami. Do not do that. Pick a bar with some character, sit outside if the weather is good, and let the city be the entertainment.

Evening Cruises

Sunset and Evening Boat Tours

A sunset cruise is one of the best ways to turn a normal St. Augustine evening into something that feels like a vacation. Matanzas Bay is made for it. For sailing, Schooner Freedom is the classic choice – day sails, sunset sails, moonlight sails, and full moon sails, with live music on some sailings. For a traditional narrated boat ride, St. Augustine Scenic Cruise aboard the Victory III is a long-running option from the Municipal Marina. If the weather is good, sunset on the water beats another hour wandering shops.

Nights of Lights

Nights of Lights is St. Augustine's biggest nighttime draw of the year. The historic district is covered in millions of white lights, and the city becomes a holiday postcard for about two months. For the 2025, 2026 season, the event runs from November 15, 2025, through January 11, 2026. Starting with 2026, 2027, official dates are November 21, 2026, through January 18, 2027.

  • Walk it. The city says the best way to experience the lights is on foot.
  • Go midweek if you can – Saturdays in December can be packed.
  • Eat early or make reservations. Do not wander in at 7 p.m. with six people and expect magic.
  • Use the bayfront, Plaza, Lightner area, and side streets – St. George is only part of the experience.
  • Nights of Lights is family-friendly, date-night friendly, and camera-friendly. It is also crowded. Both things are true.

Recurring Nighttime Events

  • First Friday Art Walk – First Friday of each month, generally 5 to 9 p.m., galleries open around the historic district with music and receptions.
  • Full Moon Sails – Offered by Schooner Freedom and Sea Love Charters around the full moon, passing the lighthouse and Bridge of Lions area.
  • Lighthouse Sunset Moonrise – Special-event sunset and moonrise views from the lighthouse tower, weather permitting and limited capacity.

St. Augustine is not a true late-night dining city, so plan dinner earlier than you would in a major metro. A lot of kitchens slow down or close earlier than visitors expect, especially on weeknights. For downtown late-ish food, Prohibition Kitchen is one of the most practical choices – dinner daily until 10 p.m. and a Friday and Saturday late-night menu until 1 a.m. Meehan's works well when you want dinner near the waterfront. Barley Republic and Backyard at Meehan's are also late-night options. On the island side, A1A Burrito Works on A1A Beach Boulevard is useful when other options are closed.

The honest advice: book a real dinner between 6:30 and 8:30, then treat anything later as snacks, drinks, dessert, or pub food.

What We Actually Do at Night: If we had friends in town and one good night to show them St. Augustine, we would not try to do everything. Start near the bayfront around sunset, walk the seawall, cut through the historic district, grab dinner at Meehan's or Prohibition Kitchen, then see what music is happening at Colonial Oak or Tradewinds. If nobody had done a ghost tour before, swap the music for a ghost tour. During Nights of Lights, skip the car, walk the lights, and avoid Saturday if humanly possible. That is the real St. Augustine night: old streets, live music, a little history, a little weirdness, water nearby, and enough options that you can make it family-friendly, romantic, or slightly rowdy without forcing the city to be something it is not.
