Historic Downtown St. Augustine is the center of the city's visitor experience and one of the most important districts in Northeast Florida. This walkable area brings together centuries of history, Spanish colonial streets, museums, restaurants, shops, churches, plazas, waterfront views, and some of the most recognizable landmarks in the city. For many visitors, downtown is where a St. Augustine trip truly begins. The district includes major landmarks such as the Castillo de San Marcos, the Plaza de la Constitución, St. George Street, the Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine, Government House, the Bridge of Lions approach, and the bayfront. These places are close enough that visitors can explore much of the area on foot, which makes downtown especially useful for first-time travelers. One of the strongest features of Historic Downtown is the mix of history and activity. Visitors can tour a centuries-old fort, walk past colonial-era buildings, shop in boutiques, eat at local restaurants, visit museums, take a trolley tour, and enjoy live music without leaving the district. That density makes it easy to build an itinerary for a few hours or an entire day. St. George Street is one of the main shopping and walking corridors within the district. The pedestrian-only street is lined with shops, restaurants, galleries, candy stores, attractions, and historic buildings. It is often busy, especially during weekends and holidays. The Plaza de la Constitución serves as another anchor.
